As part of their Interdisciplinary and community service learning, third year UMDNJ-SOM medical students are placed with neighborhood-based organizations to learn first-hand how to communicate with and meet the needs of the under-served in culturally-diverse communities. Community health rotations offer medical students hands-on training in medically underserved communities.
The students, under expert supervision, observe and participate in social service, judicial, daycare, hospice, outreach; health clinics and other community-based services.
Students maintain daily journals that document how this unique experience effects their attitudes and perceptions about treating people whose cultural, educational and financial backgrounds are alien to their own.
