AHEC VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

1.      WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF CAMDEN AHEC?

Camden Area Health Education Center (AHEC) was established over 30 years ago as charitable 50l (c) 3 not-for-profit organization.  Its mission is to improve the health of community through education and advocacy.

2.      WHAT DOES AHEC DO?

AHEC helps disadvantaged people navigate complicated healthcare and insurance systems and empowers them to take control and responsibility for healthy futures. We meet people where they are and use a holistic approach that recognizes the impact that lifestyle, environment, economic status and access to care has on health.

AHEC provides services to youth, families and seniors.  Health Education services are provided on site, on our 35 mobile van and at various community sites throughout the City of Camden.  Our services reach over 10,000 individuals a year. We operate 4 farmers markets providing fresh produce with nutrition info and health screening in a city that has limited access to food stores.  We offer one on one and group education to anyone at risk for HIV/AIDS.  We provide health education to seniors who are often isolated and living in public housing.  We have a number of initiatives for young adults, ranging from life skills, HIV prevention, violence reduction, peer health education in the schools and a drop-in center.

We also train medical, nursing and public health students providing them with cultural competence – developing genuine respect or patients whose language, culture, sexual orientation, rage or economic status differ dramatically from their own.

3.      WHAT ARE THE VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES AT AHEC?

Here are some examples of how you could help:  Deliver fresh produce to homebound seniors; update our mailing list, mentor a youth; distribute information at one of farmers’ markets; make follow-up telephone calls;

Greet  visitors; handyman jobs (we have an old building);  help with outreach; bank reconciliations; inventory educational materials; become an AHEC ambassador serve on an advisory committee to share your expertise or the board of trustees.

No matter how much time or expertise you have to offer, we welcome your help.

4.      WHERE IS AHEC LOCATED?
